Self-Assessment in a Collective
When asked to describe and evaluate ourselves in the workplace most people fallshort. Sometimes individuals either don’t know what to say in fear of sounding conceited or build themselves up too much when they do not necessarily deserve the praise. It is important for leaders in the workplace to see how their employees see themselves and how they think they are contributing to the team. This importance stems from the need to understand how your employees are thinking. Getting the insight of knowing where they are in their work and placement in the company helps managers know to how facilitate the team in the most productive way.
Self-assessment is an assessment or evaluation of oneself or one’s actions and attitudes, in particular, of one’s performance at a job or learning task considered in relation to an objective standard.
Giving the employees a voice in how their performance is reviewed allows them to feel involved in the outcome. Using every resource you are given is the best way to get any job done. Your employees are the best asset to evaluate the group and obtain insights on each of their strengths and weaknesses. Having the employees involved in all the steps of a project leads to a more coherent team. When a manager learns how an employee sees themselves it also gives them time to think over the differences in their opinions before they bring in the employee for a performance review.
Your Honesty is Key:
When it comes to evaluating yourself there are certain things to keep in mind. The first is to be honest. If an employee tries to give more value to a task they completed that was a bit lackluster the manage will see right through it and overlook that part of the assessment. It is okay to admit when something you did was just mediocre. Admitting you could have done better shows that you do not think every thing you do is amazing. If you did do a great job though let them know. Show how much you contributed. If you have something to be proud of, don’t hold back, tell them about it. When assessing yourself make sure to keep it about yourself. No one will take you seriously if you start talking poorly of a coworker or your boss. It is not the employee’s job to critique a coworker so leave that up to a manager.
Almost everyone in the workplace stresses about elevations. It’s a necessary evil that can be used as a stepping stone. When implemented correctly it allows employees to really reflect on how they have been performing. It also gives the employer an understanding of where an employee thinks they are and what they think of their job performance. Sometimes seeing what an employee thinks they’re doing correctly, when in reality they are not, can give insight into something they may be confused about or highlight the weakness through lack of communication. This will allow the employer to see what his employees see as strengths and weaknesses and assist in creating a stronger group.
When Deciding Ask Yourself This:
Many generic self-assessment exams can be found online and can be tailored specifically to the standards the employee is measured against. However it is important to know what kind of assessment you are looking for from your group. Here are a few examples of questions you can ask:
- What standard of work am I being held to?
- Am I delivering work at or above that standard?
- Are my values directly aligned with that of the company?
- Does my work accurately represent the company values?
- Do I actively and effectively contribute to my team’s objective?
Self assessments are meant to re-establish a person’s place in the team as well as highlight his or her strengths and weaknesses individually and in the collective. A team can only work together productively if everyone is on the same page.
